PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) injections are a regenerative medical treatment that uses the patient’s blood components to promote healing. The procedure involves drawing a small amount of blood, processing it to isolate the platelet-rich fibrin, and injecting this solution into the targeted area. PRF contains a high concentration of platelets, growth factors, and cytokines that naturally support tissue regeneration and repair processes. Unlike PRP (a similar treatment), PRF forms a fibrin matrix that provides a slow, sustained release of growth factors to the treatment site. This therapy has applications in various medical fields, including orthopedics, dermatology, and aesthetic medicine.
Before the procedure, a comprehensive consultation takes place to evaluate the patient’s condition and determine treatment suitability. Our provider examines the target area, reviews medical history, and discusses expectations. This initial assessment helps create a tailored treatment plan and establishes appropriate injection sites for optimal therapeutic effect.
The PRF procedure begins with collecting a small amount of the patient’s blood, typically from the arm, similar to a routine blood draw. The amount gathered varies based on the size of the treatment area and the number of injections needed. Collection typically takes only a few minutes and requires minimal preparation.
Once gathered, the blood sample is immediately placed in a specialized centrifuge. This device spins it at a calibrated speed to separate platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells into distinct layers. Unlike similar procedures, the PRF process uses specific centrifugation parameters that optimize the formation of the fibrin matrix.
After centrifugation, the PRF layer is carefully extracted. This golden-yellow substance contains concentrated platelets, leukocytes, and a fibrin matrix that serves as a scaffold for tissue regeneration. No anticoagulants or additives are used in the process, allowing for a pure preparation.
The PRF is transferred to sterile syringes for immediate application. Our provider injects the solution directly into the target area using precise techniques appropriate for the specific condition. Depending on the treatment plan, multiple injections may be performed during a single session.
After the procedure, the patient is observed briefly to monitor for immediate reactions. Our provider may apply light pressure or cold compresses to minimize swelling at injection sites. Before departure, patients receive specific aftercare instructions to maximize the therapeutic benefits of the PRF treatment and ensure proper healing.
Proper aftercare following PRF injections is essential for optimal results and minimizing complications. Patients should avoid touching or pressing the treated area for at least 24 hours and refrain from strenuous activities for 1-2 days. Mild swelling or redness is normal and typically subsides within 48 hours. Patients are advised to stay well-hydrated, avoid blood-thinning medications unless medically necessary, and follow any specific care instructions our practitioners provide for their particular treatment area.
