What Is a Sports Injury?

Sports injuries occur when athletes sustain harm to their bodies from participating in sports activities. They can range from minor sprains and strains to more severe damage, such as fractures, dislocations, and concussions. Such injuries are prevalent due to the physical demands on the body during athletic performance. Both contact sports, like football, and non-contact activities, such as running and swimming, carry risks of damage. Injuries may include sudden trauma and slow degradation of tissues that happens over a long time.

Types of Sports Injuries

Concussions are some of the most common sports injuries. They are characterized by traumatic brain damage from a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. Concussions disrupt normal brain function and can cause symptoms like migraines, dizziness, confusion, memory problems, or loss of consciousness.
Overuse injuries result from repetitive trauma to a part of the body over time. Examples include tendinitis (inflammation of tendons), stress fractures, a runner’s knee, and tennis elbow. They often cause pain, swelling, and loss of function.
Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac located between bones and soft tissues, such as muscles, tendons, and skin. It develops gradually over time from chronic overuse or direct trauma to the area.
Sprains are characterized by stretching or tearing of ligaments (tissues connecting bones). They often happen when a joint twists in an awkward direction. The severity of a sprain ranges from a minor overextension to a complete rupture.
Strains occur when muscles or tendons stretch or tear. They are often caused by activities requiring the muscles to contract forcefully or when the tissues are not adequately warmed. Strains can range from a minor pull to a complete rupture.
Fractures are cracks or complete breaks in bones. These usually happen due to a single forceful impact, such as a collision. Stress fractures develop more slowly over time as bones are subjected to repetitive stress.
Dislocations occur when the bones in a joint become misaligned or separated. This happens when an unexpected force pulls the bones out of their normal position in the joint. Typical dislocation sites include the shoulders, elbows, fingers, knees, and hips.

Candidates for Sports Injury Treatment

Professional Athletes

Professional athletes across many disciplines frequently sustain injuries during training and competition. Sports with high damage rates include football, basketball, soccer, hockey, and baseball. Professional athletes often need expert medical care for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Youth Sports Participants

Children and adolescents who participate in youth leagues also commonly experience sports injuries. Cartilage in developing bodies is vulnerable to overuse and acute damage. Sports with high youth injury rates include football, soccer, basketball, baseball, and cheerleading. Parents can receive professional care at Advanced Wellness.

Adult Recreational Athletes

Adults who play sports recreationally and in local amateur leagues may also sustain both acute and overuse injuries. Popular activities include tennis, running, basketball, soccer, and softball. Middle-aged and older athletes may be at higher risk for specific injuries due to declining muscle mass, flexibility, and recovery capacity. Such patients can receive excellent care in our health centers located in Marlboro, NJ.
