Acupuncture is a technique of traditional Chinese medicine where fine, sterile needles are inserted into specific points on the body. The strategic placement of needles stimulates natural healing processes. This gentle therapy addresses imbalances within the body by activating specific points. Acupuncture is a complementary approach that can work alongside conventional medical treatments. Each acupuncture procedure is tailored to the individual’s unique health needs, focusing on the points that best support their wellness journey.
Hui Yang is a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac) who is board certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) in the state of New Jersey. She has practiced acupuncture since 1995.
Our practitioner reviews the patient’s health history and any specific concerns during the first appointment. They may ask about symptoms, lifestyle, and any previous treatments. This assessment helps determine the most effective acupuncture points to target, ensuring the procedure is tailored to the individual’s needs.
Once the treatment plan is determined, our practitioner inserts very fine, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body. Needle placements may vary depending on the condition being treated, but they are typically inserted at shallow depths. The process is generally painless, with most patients reporting a sensation of mild pressure or warmth at the insertion site.
In some cases, our practitioner may gently manipulate the needles after insertion to enhance the treatment’s effects. This could involve small, controlled movements or light electrical stimulation. Needle manipulation is meant to help improve the body’s natural healing response and make the treatment more effective.
Following needle insertion and stimulation, the patient is left to relax for a short period, typically 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, the body can adequately respond to the acupuncture treatment. Patients may feel deeply relaxed, and the environment is quiet and soothing to help facilitate healing.
At the end of the treatment session, the needles are gently removed. This process is quick and usually painless. After removal, our practitioner may discuss any sensations or changes the patient has experienced, adjusting future treatments to address the individual’s evolving needs.
Complementary procedures like physical therapy can be crucial in managing and alleviating pain. By combining acupuncture with such medical treatments, patients may experience enhanced recovery outcomes. Physical therapy focuses on strengthening muscles, improving mobility, and increasing flexibility, which in turn helps relieve pain caused by injuries, chronic conditions, or post-surgical recovery. With targeted exercises and techniques, our physical therapist can address specific areas of discomfort, ultimately reducing pain and improving overall function. This approach works alongside other treatments to support long-term healing and prevent further issues.
Acupuncture is a versatile treatment option that benefits many patients. It is suitable for individuals looking to manage pain and improve overall well-being. The following groups of people are typically considered good candidates for acupuncture:
Acupuncture has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in alleviating various types of pain, including chronic back pain, arthritis, migraines, and neck tension. The insertion of thin needles at specific points stimulates the nervous system to release natural pain-killing compounds, such as endorphins. This ancient practice offers an alternative approach to pain management that many patients find effective when conventional treatments have failed to provide adequate relief.
Stress has become a pervasive element of daily life in today’s fast-paced society. Acupuncture treatments can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, inducing a relaxation response that counteracts the body’s stress reactions. Regular sessions have been shown to lower cortisol levels and promote a sense of calm, helping individuals develop greater resilience to the psychological and physical impacts of chronic stress.
Many individuals suffering from insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns have found significant improvement through acupuncture therapy. By addressing the underlying imbalances contributing to sleep disturbances, acupuncture helps regulate the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Patients often report falling asleep more easily, experiencing fewer nighttime awakenings, and feeling refreshed upon waking, enhancing their overall well-being.
Acupuncture treatments have been associated with improved cognitive function and mental clarity. By optimizing circulation to the brain and balancing neurotransmitters, regular sessions can help dispel the mental fog that often accompanies stress, poor sleep, or certain health conditions. Many patients report sharper thinking, better memory, and increased focus after acupuncture treatments.
Beyond its physical benefits, acupuncture offers powerful support for emotional health. The treatment helps regulate mood-influencing hormones and neurotransmitters, potentially easing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Many patients describe a profound sense of emotional equilibrium following treatments, with effects that extend beyond the session and enhance their quality of life in meaningful ways.

Acupuncture is generally not painful, as the needles are fine and thin. Most patients report only a mild sensation of pressure or a slight prick when the needles are inserted.
The number of visits varies depending on the individual’s condition and response to treatment. Some patients may experience relief after a few sessions, while others require ongoing care for optimal results.
While both techniques involve the insertion of needles, dry needling is focused on muscle trigger points to alleviate pain, whereas acupuncture targets specific points based on traditional practices. They differ in their approach and underlying philosophy.
Insurance coverage for acupuncture depends on the provider and the specific policy. You should check with your insurance company to confirm whether acupuncture treatments are included in your plan.
